He is also survived by his three brothers: Don (Skip) Horning, Bob (Linda) Horning, and Dick (Judy) Horning. He is proceeded in death by his parents. Doug graduated from Ann Arbor (Pioneer) High School in 1961 and from the University of Michigan four years later with a degree in physical education.

He was an accomplished wrestler in high school and college, finishing as the Big 10 runner-up when he was a senior at the University of Michigan. He later coached wrestling and taught at Pioneer High, before buying Stein and Goetz Sporting Goods, which would later become the M-Den. Two of Doug’s greatest loves were softball and golf.

He played fastpitch softball for a number of years before devoting himself to coaching his daughters and countless others. In 1997, Doug was named to the Michigan ASA Softball Hall of Fame for his meritorious service. His love for the game continued into his retirement years as he gained yet another softball family playing near his home in Florida.

He loved golf, and spent much of his time on the course with family and friends, whether it was in Ann Arbor, or on his beloved yearly golf trips with his closest friends in Las Vegas. Though his life and business revolved around sports, the true center of his being was his family and friends. He was a man of integrity and generosity, always devoting himself to others.
