Milton Earl Moore died late Saturday night in his home surrounded by four generations of his loving and devoted family. He was seven weeks shy of his 95th birthday. Milt was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, the youngest of eight male children.

He attended Culver Stockton College for a year before he enlisted in the Army and served in two theaters during WWII. He returned to Culver Stockton to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and is where he met and fell in love with his beloved wife, Dolores. They were married in 1948 and celebrated their 70th anniversary together last summer.

In the early 1950s, he and Dolores moved their young family to Ann Arbor where he accepted the job of supply manager at Ulrich’s Bookstore. He and two other managers eventually purchased Ulrich’s and owned the store until their retirement in the late 1980s. Milt was a skilled woodworker and a gifted stained glass artist, sharing his many artistic creations with generations of family and friends.

He was an accomplished football player in high school and college and became an avid supporter of Michigan football and basketball. Most importantly, he will be remembered for his abundant generosity, kindness, humor, and devotion to family and friends. He welcomed all into his home and his heart, turning strangers into friends and family.

He began each day asking “Have I told you I love you today? Well, I sure do! ” He ended each day in silent prayer giving thanks for every member of four generations of loved ones.

He was preceded in death by all of his brothers and their spouses. He is survived by his wife, Dolores (née Doerfler); his children, Milton Scott (wife, Anne), Gary Lee (wife, Jan), Sarah Beth Ely (husband, Ed) Diana Lynn (partner, Judith) and Karen Jeannine Sakalys-Moore (wife, Audrey); his grandchildren, Steve Lumetta (wife, Jessica), Susan Heerspink (husband, Adam), Lindsey Johnson (husband, Jay), Kasey Mahony, Carol, Matt Mahony (fiancé Hannah), David (wife Erin), Lily Moore-Eissenberg, and Tyler Sakalys-Moore; great-grandchildren, Alyson, Walter, Milly, Piper, Gabriel, Thomas, Penelope, Carly, and Gus (Little Milty); his nephew, John; and countless neighbors and friends who loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations in Milt’s memory can be made to Arbor Hospice (2366 Oak Valley Dr, Ann Arbor, MI 48103) and Journey of Faith Church (1900 Manchester Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48104).

A celebration of his life will be held sometime this summer.
