Douglas R. Peters 85 of Ravenna, Ohio passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2019. He was born on February 4, 1933 to Raymond and Margaret (Nemec) Peters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a Ravenna High School Class of 1951 graduate.

Following graduation, Doug entered the United States Navy and his service was spent on the USS Frontier, but mainly on the USS DeHaven 727. He was a lifelong member of the USS DeHaven Sailors Association, attending many annual reunions. After coming home from the military, Doug joined the Ravenna Police Department.

He again served his country, this time attaining 36 years on the force with 16 years spent as Police Chief. He was a member of the Portage County FOP, National Chiefs Association, Ducks Unlimited, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was extremely proud of his military record and his years with the Ravenna Police Department.

His greatest joy and sense of pride and fulfillment in his life was his son, Doug. He had a tremendous love for children and was pivotal in developing the D.A.R.E. Program in Ravenna.

Any one that knew him was accustomed to his dry humor. His favorite grumble at times of frustration was, “Should have bought a boat! ” His love for the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and cooking was always with him.

He gladly accepted the pleasure of smoking, cooking, and grilling for large area functions. He was known for his love for his many Beagles and Black Labradors. He will be profoundly missed by his best friend, Lucy, his Black Lab that was always at his side.

Survivors include his wife Donna (Byerly) and son Douglas Scott, Sister-in-law Sandra Byerly and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers David and Bruce, and Brothers-in-law Ronald and John Byerly and Mother in Law Mary Byerly. A special thanks to Drs.

Emanuel Yanelli and Edward Kurz of Ravenna for their wonderful care. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ravenna Police Department Association, Wounded Warriors, the Portage County APL or Happy Trails Sanctuary.
