William (Bill) Harry Lindsey peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Austin, Texas. He was 98 years old. Bill was born on July 24, 1919, in Hamburg, Arkansas, where he spent his youth and teen years until joining the Army Air Corps in 1939.

He was assigned to the Ferry Command at the end of his basic training and flew airplanes all over the world during World War II, including 50 missions over the Himalayas (also known as “The Hump”). After the war, Bill attended… Read More » The University of Arkansas earning his Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. He then attended The University of Arkansas School of Medicine, graduating in 1951.

Prior to coming to Waxahachie in 1963, he had other private practice opportunities and obtained additional training in Internal Medicine. Dr. Lindsey practiced medicine in Waxahachie until 1985 upon his retirement. While in Waxahachie, Dr. Lindsey was very active in the community while serving multiple terms on the Waxahachie Independent School District Board of Trustees, including one term serving as President.

He served a term as Chief of Staff of the W.C. Tenery Community Hospital. Bill was very active in the Waxahachie Rotary Club, serving as President at one time. He was a member of the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge #90 AF & AM as well as being a member of the Dallas Scottish Rite.

Dr. Lindsey was very active in the Central Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School classes ranging from Senior High School students to the Seekers Class and, also, serving as an Elder. He was, also, a member of the Waxahachie Foundation. After retirement, he became a master woodworker producing many pieces of beautiful furniture for numerous family members and friends.

One of his proudest projects was making the large wooden front doors of the Central Presbyterian Church. They were a recreation of the original doors. Bill was a “pool shark” holding weekly pool games in his game room with his friends on Wednesday nights for almost 30 years.

Bill met his wife, Bettye Lorraine Fuller, in 1941 in the Sunday School class of the First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo, Texas, while he was in flying school at Goodfellow AFB. They married in Long Beach, California, on January 19, 1942, and were married 72 years before Bettye’s passing in 2014. They had moved to Austin, Texas, in 2005 to be closer to many family members.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings and spouses, and his beloved wife, Bettye. He is survived by his son, Jim Lindsey and his wife, Margie; his daughter, Susan Holey and her husband, Erling ; his daughter, Lori Simon and her husband, Craig; 11 grandchildren, Billy Lindsey and his wife, Tracy, Carrie McKenzie and her husband, Luke, Mark Lindsey and his wife, Carrie, Jennifer Marchman and her husband, Evan, Eric Holey, Bettye Hobbs and her husband, David, Hillary Granda and her husband, Alex, Amberle Heath and her husband, Jeff, Lindsey Raifsnider and her husband, Joseph, Amy Simon, and Becky Simon; 14 great-grandchildren, J.J. McKenzie, Avery Lindsey, Alex Lindsey, Emily Lindsey, Cameron Lindsey, Kirven Marchman, Dunagan Marchman, Ayla Marchman, Nathan Hobbs, Eli Granda, Kitty Heath, Lexi Heath, Christopher Heath, and Elizabeth Heath. A memorial service will be held on July 24, 2018, at the Central Presbyterian Church in Waxahachie.

The time of the service is still pending. His ashes will be interred at the National Cemetery in Grand Prairie, Texas. In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that donations be made to the Boy Scout Troop #232 under the direction of First Baptist Church, Midland, Texas, whose summer camp he provided medical care and first aid classes to for many years, or to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Texas.
