Eda Olsen 1928-2018 Eda Hodges Olsen age 90, passed away peacefully at the Elk Ridge Assisted Living Center in Elk Ridge, Utah on June 4, 2018 from causes incident to old age and dementia. Born March 27, 1928 in Preston, Idaho the daughter of George Edwin and Marguerite Dalley Hodges. She married Dean DeVere Olsen February 25, 1946 in Ogden, Utah.
Their marriage was solemnized March 15, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of three sons: Dennis J., Richard Dean (Rick) and Kerry Kent. Eda’s mother died of Brights disease on July 14, 1928, when Eda was just 3 1/2 months old.
Her paternal grandparents George and Sarah Jane Spackman Hodges raised her, as it was her mother’s dying request. She was raised on the family farm until she graduated the 9th grade. Her dad and brothers, Melvin, Blaine and Gayle lived nearby and they were very close.
Her dad married Alta Stephenson and she ended up with three more brothers and a sister; Steve, Gary, Quinn and Joylene. When she graduated 9th grade she moved to Ogden, Utah to help her Aunt Linda Albiston. She attended and graduated in 1946 from Weber High School.
In 1949 Dean, Eda, Denny and Rick moved to Northern California where Dean worked in the saw mills and eventually owned and operated his own logging trucks. Kerry was born during this time. Denny became ill and spent time in the hospital in San Francisco and was eventually diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.
He passed away September 21, 1956. The family moved back to Utah and to Woods Cross in 1957, then to Bountiful in 1964. Wherever they have lived they have always had great friends and neighbors who were just like family to them.
In 1972 Kerry was in an industrial accident and severely injured. Since that time Eda has dedicated herself to caring for him. Dean passed away May 29, 1991 and since then Eda has had the responsibility of caring for Kerry without Dean’s help.
Dementia started setting in and in September 2016 Rick and Sue and Eda’s brother Quinn moved her to Elk Ridge Assisted Living to be close to Rick and Sue’s home. They moved Kerry there also. They had their own rooms, but could visit, eat meals together and enjoy each other and they did.
Eda was loved and honored by the entire family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of the Bountiful 27th Ward since it was established. She held many callings in her life of service.
