Ruth Grant Johnson of Layton, Utah passed into eternity on Sunday, June 3. She was 94 years old. She was born to Jedidiah Morgan Grant III and Nellie Amelia May on October 15, 1923 in Lovell, Wyoming, the ninth of 11 children.
She grew up in Wyoming attending Lovell High School. Shortly after high school, Ruth moved to California to live with an older sister. She worked various jobs including for the shipyards during World War II.
In 1945, she met and married on her birthday, Allen Albert Johnson of Newman Grove, Nebraska. They were blessed with two children: Lawrence Allen (1954) and Cindy (1958). She lived most of her adult life in Paramount, Bellflower and Chino, California, moving to Layton, Utah a few years after the death of her husband to care for her sister.
Ruth was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was re-activated in 1961 upon the baptism of her husband and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1962. She held various positions in the Church primarily teaching children and youth.
Her love for children was evident her whole life. Many a child would go exploring in her purse to find a hidden piece of candy. She was also active in genealogy/family history research, spending many years working in the Family History Library and later as an ordinance worker in the Los Angeles Temple.
She had a fiery, yet infectious personality that attracted people to her. To many she was “Aunt Ruth” regardless of family relationship. She loved handicraft work and blessed many people’s lives with the creations of her hands, which she continued to create until her passing.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Albert Johnson and daughter, Cindy Johnson Elison. Surviving are her sister Elizabeth Clark of Layton, Utah, her son, Lawrence Allen (Danna Knight) Johnson of Irmo, South Carolina, and son-in-law, Shirl Kent Elison of South Jordan, Utah. She has 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with one on the way.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Peacefield Ward, 1589 East Gentile, Layton. Friends may visit family Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment, Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont, California.
