Edward Joseph Kozlowski, 92, of South Haven, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2018 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 4, 1926 to Paul and Mildred Kozlowski. Ed was a veteran of World War II, serving honorably in the US Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater on a Mine Sweeper from 1944 to 46.
He graduated from South Haven High School in 1944. Ed worked for the City of South haven Water Works Department for many years and later became part owner of B & K Machin Products with his brother Bruno until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the BPOE (Elks), the American Legion, and the VFW.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parrish in Bangor and then transferred to St. Basil Parrish in South Haven where he worshipped faithfully for many years. In his early years, Ed was an avid golfer and bowler, with a hole-in-one and a 300 game to his accomplishment. On April 30, 1994 he married Christy Bergstrom Smith.
He would say, “It was the best thing I ever did”. His favorite times were spent enjoying and experiencing life with his family. He loved going to all his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.
Ed had a great sense of humor, a huge heart, and enjoyed sharing both with his loving family. He is survived by his wife – Christy, brother – Bruno (Barbara) Kozel of Glouster, Massachusetts, nieces – Lisa LeVasseur, Laura Calcheras and nephew Rob Kozel, children – James Smith Jr. and Laurie (Tom) Tanczos, brother-in-laws – James and Oscar (Wanda) Bergstrom, sister-in-law – Carol (Duane) Noykos, cherished grandchildren – Kristin (Phill) Reinink, James (Rachel) Smith III, and Taylor Tanczos, great grandchildren – Reese Christine and Crue Charles Reinink, and many nieces and nephews – Sandy (Bill) Warren, Karen (Jeff) Dombrowski, Matt (Sonja) Noykos, Cheryl (Dave) Ondrias, Aaron (Tara) Tanczos, and Megan (Nate) Shank. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother – Joseph Kozlowski, sister-in-law – Marie Bergstrom, brother-in-law and wife – Charles and Marion Bergstrom, life-long friend – Ron Kozlik, and beloved dog “Buddy” who passed away seven days before Daddy Ed.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the St. Basil Catholic Church with Father Jim Morris officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ed’s memory to the St. Basil Catholic Church, 513 Monroe Boulevard, South Haven, Michigan 49090 or to the Al Van Humane Society, PO Box 421, South Haven, Michigan 49090.
