Obituary for Edward L. Chmielewski Edward L. Chmielewski, Saginaw, Michigan. Beloved father, uncle and friend passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living. Age 94 years.
The son of the late Zygmund and Michalina (Sienko)Chmielewski, Ed was born November 17, 1923 in Saginaw, Michigan. He attended Holy Rosary, Central Junior and Saginaw High Schools. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock CVA 19 in the Pacific Theater from the Philippines into Tokyo Bay.
Edward married Mary E. Gaus on September 7, 1946 in Saginaw. She predeceased him June 30, 2008. He joined the Saginaw Police Department on January 2, 1948 and retired with the rank of Captain on October 31, 1975.
Ed was appointed Undersheriff of Saginaw County by Sheriff James L. Kelly. He served as undersheriff for 17 years, 2 months, retiring on December 31, 1992. While serving as Undersheriff, Edward was involved in the formation of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET), was elected its first chairman and served on its Board of Directors for years.
Total police service was 45 years. Ed was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 105, Saginaw Law Enforcement Association, United Government Employees, the American Legion Post #439, Knights of Columbus Council #4232 and the Y.M.C.A for more than 30 years. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Saginaw Municipal Employees Credit Union (Family First Credit Union), serving for 15 years until his retirement.
Ed enjoyed bowling and bowled in two senior semi-classic leagues into his late 70’s. Edward and his wife Mary were charter members of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. Surviving to cherish his memory are one son and his wife, Michael and Judy Chmielewski and many nieces and nephews.
Edward was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret (Margie) Chmielewski and Mary Szatkowski and seven brothers, William, Casimir, Joseph, Walter, Zygmunt, Albin and Anthony Chmielewski. Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at St. Dominic Parish, St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn, Saginaw. Rev, Fr.
Steven Gavit will officiate with entombment in Roselawn Mausoleum. Friends may visit at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass.
The Knights of Columbus Council #4232 will pray the Rosary at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
