Obituary for Eldridge (Al) J. Shumate Eldridge (Al) J. Shumate, 82, of Louisville passed away unexpectedly Wedmesday, June 20, 2018. He was a native of Louisville, son of the late Eldridge L. and Theresa Humphrey Shumate. He was a consultant in environmental engineering for such companies as American Air Filter and Frank Metts and Associates.

Eldridge was an artist and his passion was painting and inventing, which he was quite good at. In the words of one of his grandsons, every time I was around him, he was always so interested in our lives and I always learned something new. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Hogan Shumate; 3 sons, Steven A. (Linda), Jeffrey P. (Angel), Brian T. (Dana) Shumate; 8 grandchildren, Chris Shumate (Meredith), Holli James (Stephen), Casey Shumate (Alexandra), Trent Shumate (Kelli), Dr. Kaitlin Gordon (Dr. Brian), Colin Shumate, Chris Dixon (Jillian) and Michael Dixon (Michelle); and 10 great-grandchildren, Addison, Chloe, Gates, Shelby, Levi, Harli, Robert, Gigi, Knox, Miles, and 3 more on the way.

A Celebration of his Life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the WHAS Crusade for Children.
