Elizabeth J. “Betty” Teysen, age 94 of Mackinaw City passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Pinecrest Village in Mackinaw City. She was born February 24, 1924 in Bancroft, MI, the daughter of Duane and Dorothy (Mixer) Simpson. On June 10, 1945, in East Lansing, Betty married Kenneth C. Teysen who preceded her in death on March 19, 2014.

Betty graduated from St. Charles High School in 1942 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Michigan State College (now MSU) where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. While attending college during the war years, Betty contributed to the war effort working in a local factory as “Rosie the Riveter”. She and Ken moved to Mackinaw City in 1945 and went to work in the family business, Teysen’s Restaurant which they ran until 1995.

They also owned and operated Teysen’s Gift Shop which their son Greg and wife Vicki still run. Betty was a member of the Mackinaw City Women’s Club, the Mackinaw City Garden Club and the Church of the Straits where she was very involved in the church’s outreach program, Straits Area Resort Ministries. She participated in the Mackinaw City P.T.O. and the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Survivors include her son, Greg (Vicki), Teysen of Mackinaw City, daughter, Beth Teysen, of Tucson, AZ, two grandsons, Brian (Olivia) Teysen of Hudsonville and Eric Teysen of Ann Arbor and four great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Charlotte, Barrett and Silas. Besides her husband Ken, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth, Jr., daughter, Marsha Teysen and two siblings, Robert Simpson and Shirley Simpson-Houser. A memorial service will take place at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City on Friday, December 21 at 11:00 AM with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.

Pastor Dave Wallis will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mackinaw City Women’s Club, Mackinaw Historical Society or the Church of the Straits. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
