She was born at Hoquiam General Hospital on January 16, 1923, to Asa and Alice (Osborne) Fishel. She was a third generation member of the Fishel family that settled on the Burn, later known as Neilton.

Her grandparents were Ernest and Elizabeth Fishel who settled there in 1903. When her mother died in 1924, Elizabeth spent a large amount of time in their care. Then in May of 1926, Asa had met and married Isabel Pierce, who became a real and loving mother, embracing the little girl.

In later years Elizabeth was joined by a brother David and three sisters, Iris, Betty and Caroline. Although the family had lived in different places in Neilton, they eventually they moved into the home where her parents spent their remaining lives. Sadly, David died in childhood from meningitis.

The girls attended Lake Quinault School and Elizabeth graduated in 1941. Elizabeth learned to play the piano in the third grade and starting in the eighth grade, she continued to faithfully play for pleasure and for church. Only in the past months had she not occupied the piano bench at the church.

She had not limited herself in music to piano, but also played a saxophone and sang in the choir. Church remained an important part of her life where she taught, performed, and was ordained in her senior years. She and Larel Carlyle were married on May 31, 1941.

Larel and Eliabeth spent many years together with families on both sides. Fishel and Carlyle reunions occur every year and her involvement and dedication to both events was thorough. Their union soon produced a son in 1942 and Kenneth was a healthy child.

However, in the next few years they sadly suffered the loss of three infants. The couple shared their sorrow and turned to their faith together. In 1950 they happily found and adopted a daughter, Candice.

They both worked and spent time with friends and family. Larel had worked at several different jobs and finished his working years at Rayonier. Elizabeth began at the school as cook and bus driver and retired in 1990.

That retirement did not lessen her load as she sewed, crocheted, knitted, gardened, and mowed her own lawn; she even continued keeping this pace until this past month. She was a “Woman to be Reckoned With” and compiled an extra ordinary amount of quilts that blessed family and friends. Some former students remember certain meals prepared at school.

Many acquaintances shared her breads, pies, and cakes. She was a great cook. As a busdriver she ran a “tight ship” and kids still recall their trips up the North Shore with her at the helm.

Remembering many years of camping has been special to the grandchildren. Larel and Elizabeth also spent time visiting relatives in eastern Washington and traveling to Canada and Alaska with family. More than that they also opened their doors to many relatives and friends.

Elizabeth had many friends who visited as they enjoyed crafts and games. She loved flowers and shared her collection of pots on her deck filled with color. Her positive attitude and work ethic will remain in our memories, as well as, her love and devotion to God and her family.

Elizabeth is survived by her son, Kenneth Carlyle and wife, Carla; her daughter, Candice Theel and husband, Dennis; her five grandchildren, Barbara Weatherly, Beth Allen, Ronald Theel, Alison Carlyle, and Tom Carlyle; thirteen great grandchildren, Josh, Jessica, Whitney, Tylor, Chris, Lacey, Haylee, Seth, Sadie, JR, Brittnee, Brandon; and eleven great greatgrandchildren; one sister, Caroline Mason; one sister-in -law Isabel Carlyle; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larel; her parents, Asa and Isabel Fishel; her sisters, Betty Miller and Iris Miller, a brother, David Fishel; her children, Ronald Thomas, Gerald Thomas, Alice Lorraine; her grandchildren, Joel Carlyle, Susan Theel; and many other relatives. A graveside service with vault interment will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the Quinault Cemetery.

The memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm, on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the Community of Christ Church in Neilton, Washington with Glen Fishel and Dale Fishel officiating. Jigger Davis and Mary Christensen will be the musicians. A reception will be held at the Community of Christ Church following the graveside.
