Obituary of Elizabeth Truitt Elizabeth Jane (Bette) Truitt, 92, died peacefully in her Salisbury home on Saturday, December 8, 2018, surrounded by her three children and two nieces. Born in Allen, MD on March 12, 1926, she was the daughter of Ethel Jane Whayland and Nevins Linwood Elliott. Bette graduated from Wicomico High School in Salisbury and Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, where she studied Fashion Merchandising.

In 1947, she married James Thomas Truitt II, who was her husband and love of her life for almost 60 years. The Truitts built and operated the Chateau 66 apartments in Ocean City, Maryland for 20 years. Bette was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a former member of the Altar Guild, and treasurer of the Opportunity Shop for 25 years.

She was also a member of and past president of the Elks Auxiliary. She loved and supported her family with great passion, as was evident during visits with her children and the many social gatherings in the historic family home in Newtown where she lived for over 50 years. She was a member of the Board of the Friends of the Poplar Hill Mansion, which highlighted her appreciation for the beauty and charms of the past.

Bette loved playing duplicate bridge whenever possible from her college years through the end of her amazing long life. She also lovingly adored her two marmalade tabby cats, Sugar and Spice, and was an avid champion of animal rescue. She is survived by her son, James Thomas Truitt, III (Tom), daughter Terese Lynn Truitt (Terry) and her husband Erik Bjornstedt, daughter Tonie Elizabeth Abrams; nieces Robin Hawkins and Karen Brookmire and their families; and sister-in-law Jane Elliott and two nieces Janet Kessinger and Gail Elliott.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her son-in-law Stanley Abrams, her brother Howard Waldon Elliott and grandniece, Shelli, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Betty Truitt. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 11 am at Asbury United Methodist Church. Friends may call in the parlor one hour prior to the service.

The Rev. Dr. Benita Harris will officiate. Internment will follow in the family plot at Parsons Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802; Asbury United Methodist Church, 1401 Camden Ave. , Salisbury, MD 21801; or any local humane society or animal rescue.
