I was born in Pauls Valley, Ok on March 19, 1947 and passed from this life on February 3, 2019 at my home in Paoli, Ok at the age of 71. I have 4 sisters and 1 brother. My Daddy and Mama had a 280 acre farm where they raised cattle, pigs, chickens, a huge garden, an apple orchard, large fields of corn, cotton, and pecan trees.
I went to p.v. to school for 12 yrs. , riding the school bus to and from (Still remember Charlie Rayburn making some rowdy teen age boys get off the bus and walk home! If a bus driver did that now, he would probably go to jail, but those boys showed a lot more respect for others the rest of the school year) I guess maybe I have more than one “favorite” memory … Running around the farm barefoot (I could have probably walked on nails by the end of summer!
), dragging main, the D.J.s that came to town & had a dance, Ballard’s Dairy Queen, Brewer’s Drive-in, the skating rink, bowling alley, the pie suppers at Church, the times the ladies gathered up and quilted & the kids got to play underneath the quilt, walking across the pasture to see my friends, speeding down a dirt road with the music cranked in my Daddy’s old pickup. I worked on the farm in the summer. Working the fields and helping sell fruit from the orchard, helping can enough fruit and vegetables for the winter and hauling hay.
Mama making homemade ice cream after a long, hot day of work and sitting on the front porch eating it and watching the fireflies. In the fall it was picking cotton and pecans. I liked Ms. McKinley and Mr. Ernest Willingham as teachers.
I worked in OKC at a moving and storage business from the time I graduated until April1966 when I married my Jim and had babies, a son and 2 daughters. My husband hated when I worked at a job, He said when he and the kids got home from school and work, they came into an empty house if I was at work. When I was on the other side of the door or meeting them in the yard, they came back to a home instead of a lonesome, empty house.
I worked for an income tax company for 3 tax seasons, did inventory for Wacker’s warehouse, and Ford motor company, but mostly I was a home maker. Jim and I bought a home in Paoli in 1968. Then built our own home in 1990.
