Essie’s Obituary Essie L. (Big Mama) Patterson Essie L. Benson was born May 14, 1923 to the late Essie B. and Mattie Benson in Yalobusha, (Oakland) MS. Essie confessed her love for Christ and was an active member of Riverside Missionary Baptist Church until her health failed. ‘Big Mama’ as she was fondly called by the family and everyone in the neighborhood was very instrumental in helping to raise her grandchildren.

Along with her granddaughters she also cared for Annita, Sherita, and Katherine Denton, neighbors across the street. Nurturing, cooking and caring for them along with her daughters and son-in-law was her heart’s passion, family was very important to her. Essie finished her race on May 13, 2019.

She is survived by her daughters, Alice (Dennis) Bradford and Vera Dear. Three beautiful granddaughters, Denise Bradford, Daphne Bradford, Tracye Dogan all from Memphis, TN. Her great grandchildren, Alexus Yvette and Trae Alexander Dogan.

One sister, Mabel Jones from Detroit, MI. Proceeding her in death is her husband John Patterson, brother Willie Wallace (Bernice) Benson, sisters Irene (Earnest) Green, Ida Frances Reese and granddaughter, Pamela B. Lyles. The Lord was merciful to Big Mama and provided to her more than the years He promised, she lived a long life surrounded in love.

Her family will truly miss her presence and spirit.
