Esther’s Obituary Esther Cornelia Hastings King was born in Richmond, Virginia, on May 30, 1923, to Myrtle and Howard Hastings. She was active in the Baptist church there, and as a young adult taught Sunday school for teen girls. She studied piano for several years and also played the violin in high school.

After high school Esther worked as a government accountant. She also spent many hours as a Red Cross volunteer during World War II. In 1954, she married Thomas King, and they welcomed son Warren in 1956.

In 1957, the family moved to Texas, and daughter Donna joined the family in 1960. Esther was a long-time, active member of First Baptist Church of Garland. She passed her faith down to her children, and made sure that they attended Sunday school to learn about the Lord.

While raising her children she also had two home businesses, first as a bookkeeper and then as a specialty cake maker. Other creative interests included sewing, knitting, crocheting, and floral arranging. Esther loved to travel, and toured much of the U.S. after retiring.

In her later years she also taught a Bible study at a local seniors’ home, which she continued well into her 80’s. Esther was preceded in death by her father, Howard Hastings; mother, Mertie Hastings; sister, Thelma Cheatham; husband, Thomas J. King, Jr.; and son, Warren T. King. She is survived by her daughter, Donna King; nephews Ernie Henderson (Mary) of Fulshear, TX, and Jim Ed Henderson of Jackson, MS; and nieces Carolyn Easterwood (Bill) of Corpus Christi, Betty Crenwelge of Longview, Cecilia Whitley (Leon) of Elgin, and Jeraldine King of Elgin.

It’s easy to picture a large reunion upon her home-going, full of family and friends. We will miss her, but look forward to a future when we will again be together in the family of God. We will celebrate Esther’s life on May 17that 1:30 pm, at First Baptist Church of Garland, Cockrell Chapel, 801 W. Avenue D, Garland, Texas 75040.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, 406 W. 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111.
