Obituary for Esther Josephine Omodt Esther Josephine Omodt passed away peacefully in her home in Rochester, Minnesota on October 28, 2018 after a short illness. She went to heaven surrounded by her family. Esther was born in Caledonia, Minnesota to Carl and Mary Laumb.

She attended high school in Caledonia, and eventually moved to Rochester after marrying her husband, Raymond Omodt in 1952. Together they enjoyed square dancing and going out to dinner with friends and relatives. Esther sang in the Sweet Adeline musical group for many years.

While working as a legal secretary in Rochester, she attended the University of Minnesota, and received her Master of Education in Adult Education degree in June of 1996. She taught at the Rochester Community and Technical College for more than 30 years as a legal administrative support instructor. She was an amazing teacher – patient, kind, and with the ability to explain complicated information to her students.

There were many times when her husband would encounter her former students around Rochester, and they would always say that she was the “best teacher that they ever had”. This was never a surprise to her family. Esther was the most loving and giving person in the world.

Esther was the heart of the family – the center that kept them all doing well, and they are heartbroken that she is not with them on earth anymore. She was always doing things for her family, whether it was proofreading a paper or doing laundry. Mostly, she was always there with words of encouragement telling them that they were doing a good job and that she was proud of them.

Her words of encouragement were so important to her children growing up, and helped to shape them into the people they are today. All the love that she gave her children, she continued with her grandchildren. She took care of her grandchildren while their parents were at work, and so enjoyed attending concerts, athletic events, and school activities where her grandchildren were involved.

She was a second mom to all of them. In 1998, she bought a cabin up north together with her daughter – a dream come true for both of them. There were 20 years of happy summers – with days filled with planting red geraniums, driving the boat while her daughter water-skied, and peaceful naps.

And when the grandchildren came, the cabin became a place for the whole family to gather for swimming, skiing, fireworks, and good food. In September 2018, she was in the water as usual helping to get the boat out for the season. Esther is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Erling Laumb; and her sister, Palma Trapp.

Esther is survived by her husband; two children, Jean Omodt and David Omodt; and three grandchildren, Raelynn Omodt, Hannah Omodt, and Nathan Omodt. Esther’s funeral is on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m. at the church and the service is at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends will go to Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester after the service, and then back to Zumbro Lutheran Church for lunch afterwards.
