Born on December 5th, 1936 in Louisville, KY, God brought Ethlyn Ann Basham into this world. He must have been very confident of how many thousands of lives she would touch. Her parents, Stanley Elbert Basham and Ella Mae (Dever) Basham helped shape her into a giving, loving, beautiful human being.
On July 18th in the early hours of the morning, He took her back home. Apparently, He needed some help with sentence diagramming, or something. Ethlyn, or simply Lyn to her friends, was an accomplished musician, an incredible educator, a wonderful mother, and beautiful person.
She wore her heart and her Faith on her sleeve, and loved hard, almost to a flaw. She especially loved her family; Cory (Jayne) Spotts, of Mill Hall, PA; Erich, of Flemington, PA; Her grandchildren; Zachary (Kristi Spatara) Spotts, of Lock Haven; Meredith Spotts, of Woolrich; Tiffany (Rob Confer) Spotts, of Beech Creek, and her great grandchildren: Ava and Maxwell Spotts, and Kaylyn and Jayce Spotts. She also very much loved her Sister-in law and Brother-in-law, Claire and Don Bittner, and their children, Darjon (Pam) Bittner, and Travis (Natalie) Bittner, of the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area.
Lyn was pre-deceased by her Mother and Father, her Aunt and Uncle, Reba and Claude McQuade, her infant Brother, Louis Basham, as well as her ex-husband and best friend, Ronald Sherman Spotts. Her friends were many, and her enemies, non-existent. She was loved by all who knew her.
Lyn was a voracious reader, often reading three or four books at a time. She also loved her crossword puzzles (The New York Times being her favorite), any kind of trivia, art, music, writing, good food and good drink, and watching sports, especially her beloved Penn State Nittany Lion Football and Louisville Cardinal Basketball, although she was appalled that they hired Rick Pitino. She attended duPont Manual High School in Louisville KY, where she was a National Honor Society member.
She also participated in anything musical. She then attended Milligan College in Milligan, TN, where she learned her passion for teaching. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, narrowly missing Summa Cum Laude, because she was “Math Challenged”.
She was also a member of the renowned Milligan Concert Choir and sang with the featured trio, The MeloDears, as well as extensive solo work as a contralto in both the Classical and Jazz genres. Following college, she married, raised a family, and taught thousands how to command the English language and appreciate fine literature. She taught in Bellefonte, Bald Eagle-Nittany, and Lock Haven Junior and Senior High Schools.
Lyn, with her wicked sense of humor, amazing intelligence, and unconditional love, will sorely be missed by all who knew her. Per her request, there will be no formal service, but there will be instead, a party of celebration at The Son’s of Italy in Lock Haven at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Clinton Co. SPCA, the Ross Library in Lock Haven through the funeral home or a charity of your choice.
