Mrs. Evelyn Rose Wood, age 100, of Grand Haven passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019. She was born November 5, 1918 in Chicago, IL to Emil and Rose (Peters) Stedry. As a young girl, her elocution skills gave her the opportunity to entertain children in hospitals in the Chicago area, something she enjoyed very much.

As a teen the family moved to Grand Haven where Evelyn transferred to Grand Haven High School. During the war years Evelyn worked at several local factories including Oldberg Manufacturing where she met her future husband. Their first date was the result of a bet on the Detroit Tigers-Chicago Cubs World Series, a bet she couldn’t lose!

On May 18, 1946 she married Thomas L. Wood Sr He preceded her in death in 1962. Evelyn was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven for more than 60 years.

She was a former Deacon and Circle member at First Pres. She was the first bookkeeper at the Grand Haven Meijer when it opened and retired from there when her first grandchild was born. For many years Ev was the treasurer for the Rosy Mound School District when it was still independent.

In retirement she volunteered at NOCH for a number of years. In addition, she was an avid sports fan enjoying bowling, Detroit Tigers, Pistons and all MSU sports. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Mary Wood, and their children: Kathryn “Katy” (Bob) DeVillez, and their children: Evie, Ellie, and Emery, Andrew “Drew” (Caitlin) Wood, and their children: Sloane, Finley, and Rhys; nephews: James, William, and Robert Schmidt and their families and a number of cousins, etc.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Schmidt, and Georgene Coster. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, February 8, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Troy Hauser-Brydon officiating.

Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at church. Interment will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Evelyn may be given to the Deacon Board at First Presbyterian Church, Lakeshore Assisted Living, NOCH Hospice or a Charity of your Choice.
