Filmore Lee “Cookie” Cook, 75, of Greenville, Virginia, went to be with our Lord on January 11, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 2, 1944, to the late Tony Cook and Charlene Ruff Cook Rubush of New Hope, Virginia. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, David Miller, and stepson, Billy Taylor.
Survivors include his son, Daniel Cook of New Hope, who he loved above all things and taught his love of motorcycles, hunting, camping, and hard work; his grandson, Carter Cook, who he loved to spoil, spend time, and eat popsicles with; two sisters, Shirley Spitzer (Pete) of New Castle, VA, and Julia Miller of Crimora, VA; five stepchildren, Sandy Grandi of Penn Laird, Bobby Taylor of Greenville, Curtis Taylor of Greenville, who was also his caretaker for the last several years and worked tirelessly to make sure Cookie enjoyed his day to day life, Jennifer Spitzer of Greenville and her children who he loved and taught so many things Cassandra Stamper, Jeffrey Statler and Amanda Statler, and Melissa Taylor (Ryan) of Beaverton, OR and their children, Reanna and Isaiah who he loved to give rides on his many motorcycles and make campfires. Two nephews, Douglas Spitzer of Church Hill, TN and Earl Spitzer of New Castle, VA and two nieces Renee Vincent (Randy) of Tarpon Springs FL and Dawn Miller of Crimora. Cookie worked at Berrang in Waynesboro, VA and then retired from Paul Obaugh Ford as a talented auto body and fender repairman.
He continued to enjoy working at his home garage even after retiring and often had a waiting list of people wanting his services. He was also talented at woodworking and made beautiful cribs and woodcrafts of all kinds. He loved riding motorcycles and travelling, especially to Gatlinburg TN and West Virginia.
He was a Vietnam Veteran and supported the POW/MIA project. Cookie enjoyed hunting in his earlier years and enjoyed camping and being with friends and family. He loved to go get a friend or so and go have a picnic and spend the day beside a fire in nature.
His loving wife Mary Lue Cook always cared for Cookie but took on the caretaker role over the last four years during his illness. He often referred to her as, “The most wonderful woman I ever had”. Mary provided a level of care that was extraordinary that was complimented by healthcare workers, physical therapist, Veteran’s Affair, and Hospice.
Cookie fought the good fight until the very end and can now be made new in heaven. Active Pallbearers will be Daniel Cook, Douglas Spitzer, Curtis Taylor, Louis Cabrera, Ryan Taylor, and Roger Bowling Jr. Honorable Pallbearers will be Carter Cook, Elmer Hite, and Roger Bowling. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
The funeral service will be held 1:00pm, Thursday, January 17, 2019 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 55 Round Hill School Road, Fort Defiance, VA 24437. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers may be sent to Charlton and Groome any time before the services.
