Obituary of Florence Malanga Florence Sophia (Phillips) Malanga, 90, of Spencer, OH, went home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2018 at Burbank Park Nursing Home in Burbank, OH, one day after celebrating her 90th birthday, succumbing to a 2-year battle with ALS. Florence was born on October 26, 1928 in Yonkers, NY to Stelios and Florence Phillips. On May 6th, 1963 she married Joseph Malanga and together they made their home in Yonkers, NY, Bogota, NJ, Tenafly, NJ and Wurtsboro, NY.

Florence worked many jobs during her lifetime including employment as a secretary for Seagram’s Distillers, office worker for Lipton Tea Co. and various jobs as a waitress over the years. Above all Florence loved her family and animals. She had a very compassionate heart for all animals, but especially stray cats and dogs and was known to take them in, care for them, and make them her own.

Florence was most happy when she was entertaining her family and friends around the holiday table. She was known for her cheesecake and her upside-down pear cake, both of which were holiday staples each year. Florence was preceded in death by parents, her sister Helen (Philips) Cogan, and her husband Joseph Malanga.

She is survived by her brother Stanley Phillips (Yonkers, NY), daughter Faye Klemens (Olathe, KS), son Paul Malanga and his wife Diane (Burbank, OH). She is also survived her five grandchildren Kristin Klementowski, Katie Klementowski, and Jonathon Klementowski all of the Olathe, KS area. Matthew Malanga (Wooster, OH), and Daniel Malanga (Akron, OH).

Also surviving are two great grandchildren, Karina Klementowski and Xavier Oliveira both from the Olathe, KS area. Services will be held on Wednesday November 14th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Litchfield, OH. Interment and graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 17th at 12:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Brook Lane in Wurtsboro, NY.

The family asks that friends and loved ones consider making contributions to the ALS Team Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH in lieu of flowers.
