He served active duty from 1953 to 1955 and attended the Engineering School for Heavy Equipment Operation. He was assigned to the 74th engineering company in Korea where he built roads, airstrips, and other military facilities near the Korean DMZ. His interest in carpentry led him to pursue an apprenticeship in the trade.

In 1960 he began working for Gahan & Sons. In 1968, he formed his own company, P&L Construction, specializing in residential and commercial construction. He was an active member of the following organizations; VFW Post 5373, where he was Quartermaster and a member of the Honor Guard, the American Legion Post 470, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Luxembourg American Cultural Society.

Francis loved to plant and putter in his four gardens filled with a variety of vegetables. His prize crop was sweet corn; planting weekly so that he could have fresh, young corn throughout the summer to enjoy with his friends and family at the corn roasts he and Barb hosted. He never could plant just a few of any crop, always sharing the abundance.

His massive bonfires, with fireworks provided by a neighbor, were an annual highlight for all who attended; including some of the local law enforcement. He would accumulate wood scraps from job sites and tree trimmings for the big event. Some years the flames could be seen from as far away as Hwy 43.

Francis never really retired. He continued to work on a variety of projects for his family, friends and the community. He was known for his generosity and quick-witted humor.
