OBITUARY Frederick G. Brown May 30, 1932 – September 13, 2018 Frederick Gerome Brown, 86 Waterville – Frederick G. Brown, 86, of Waterville, passed away peacefully in his home Thursday evening, September 13, 2018. He was born in Waterville on May 30, 1932, the son of Clifford and Albertine (Giroux) Brown. Fred was educated in local schools and was in the Navy Reserves before he enlisted full-time in November 1953.
On November 13, 1954 he married Johanna LaFlamme and raised three sons: Chris, Tony and Scott. In 1956 he joined the Waterville Fire Department at the age of 27 after serving two years of active duty in the Navy. He became Waterville’s first full-time Fire Chief on January 30, 1981.
In 1983 he was part of the group that founded the Central Maine Fire Attack School. He served in 1986 and 1987 as President of the Maine Fire Chiefs Association and was the Civil Defense Leader while he was Chief. Always a family man first and avid outdoorsman, Fred retired in 1991 to spend more time enjoying life.
He instilled his family values, love of the outdoors and New England sports, into his three boys and his grandchildren. His greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed hosting gatherings in the garage with family and friends, both here in Maine and in Florida, instigating water balloon fights, fishing trips to Moosehead and attending sporting events for his six grandchildren.
He participated in softball and bowling leagues well into his 70’s. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Johanna (LaFlamme) Brown; his two sons: Christopher Brown and his wife Jody; Anthony Brown and his wife Amy; his six grandchildren: Amy and Mike Torres; Adam and Mary Beth Brown; Carrie and Jon Dyer; Daniel and Amanda Brown; Amanda and Randy Turner; Erin and Steve Estes; eleven great-grandchildren: Olivia, Addyson, Zoe, Madori, Noah, Isaac, Abby, Lena, Molly, Avery and Parker; his only sister Toni “Net” Breton and her husband Jerry; his sister-in-law Jacqueline Morin; along with many nieces and nephews who fondly called him “Mon Oncle”. He was predeceased by his youngest son Scott in 2017.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday September 21 from 5-7 pm at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday September 22 at 11:00 am at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver Street, Waterville. Burial will be at a later date in the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
