Frederick Gatz “Pete” Landry August 06, 1932 – January 28, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Frederick Gatz Landry, 86, devoted husband, father, and friend, died peacefully at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center on January 28, 2019. Frederick, or “Pete,” as he was affectionately known by so many, was born on August 6, 1932, and was delivered by his grandfather, Dr. Adrian A. Landry, in Plaquemine. Pete was a 1950 graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge.
He attended Louisiana State University where he received his Civil Engineering degree in 1954, Magna cum Laude (Tau Beta Pi Fraternity). After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army’s 7th Infantry Division, in Korea. Afterwards, he returned to Louisiana, where he met and married the love of his life, Betty Jean Prejean.
Pete was employed as a project engineer with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. He worked at DOTD for over 32 years, from 1955 until he retired in 1987. He was very proud to have been a project engineer in charge of the Westside approach to the Mississippi River (Horace Wilkinson) Bridge and the Plaquemine Overpass.
He was also a registered land surveyor and helped with many local projects, such as Westside Golf Club and the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church parking lot and first mausoleum. In addition to his dedication and service with the engineering profession, he served as President of the Brusly Hunting Club for over a decade. Whether working in his vegetable garden, hunting at his beloved deer camp, or fishing in the lakes and bayous, Pete was always an avid outdoorsman.
He also loved youth sports, particularly baseball. He coached Peanut and Little League teams in Brusly and also umpired for several years. His fairness as an umpire was so well known, he was once asked to umpire a game that involved his own team.
He also played semi-pro baseball with an American Legion Team. Pete served as a lector for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brusly. He fondly taught Catholic catechism to young men for several years.
He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 2875 and the American Legion McKinley-Bourg Post 160. He was also recognized for his support and contributions towards higher education at LSU. Pete had an infectious humor.
He had a passion for artwork, painting and wood-carving. Pete was a devoted parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brusly. His memories will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Pete is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Prejean Landry; their five children, Kelly Jean Landry Tremblay (Michel), Holly Elizabeth Landry Kelley (Lee), Linda Claire Landry, Alvin Frederick Landry (Angela) and Dr. Adrian Paul Landry, Sr. (Valerie); nine grandchildren, Adrienne Mary Whitman, Layne, Peyton, Graysen, and Raegan Kelley, Emma Grace, Adrian, Jr., and Mary-Ayres Landry and George Gatz Landry. Pete is also survived by his in-laws, Corinne Babin, Katherine Prejean Mouch (Roy), Robbie W. Prejean, Joan P. Prejean, T. Glenn Prejean (Gladys), Harold E. Prejean (Julia), Brent Haydell, Sr. and numerous nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Earle Adrian and Marguerite Lucille Gatz Landry of Port Allen; a brother, Adrian Earle “Ace” Landry; numerous in-laws, Paul Prejean, Jr. (Hazel), Robert Prejean (Margaret), Margaret P. Matherne, Leslie Prejean (Uta), Johnny Prejean, Patricia Haydell and Louis Prejean.
Visitation will be at Wilbert Funeral Home in Port Allen on Thursday, January 31st from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and again on Friday, February 1st at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brusly from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Matt Lorrain. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
