Garry McLean Rose was born May 16th, 1938 to Gean and Helen McLean Rose in Tremonton Utah, and passed away suddenly on Monday, January 28th, 2019. He was the second of four children born to the family, older brother Darrell (Arizona), younger brother Rodney, and younger sister Jeanene, both deceased. He grew up on a large farm near Malad, Idaho where he helped his dad from age 8 by driving grain trucks and tilling the land.
Because of these responsibilities, he missed a lot of school, but was able to graduate from Malad High School in 1957 with a class of 52 students. In high school he learned to play the drums and discovered boxing. He was strong and tough from working on the farm and everyone knew not to mess with “Rosie”.
He decided to attend Utah State University after high school and study aeronautics. This started his love affair with airplanes and flying. He took pilot lessons and obtained his license, which he kept for over 30 years.
He owned, and co-owned several Cessna single engine airplanes with his brother Rodney. He loved to go flying to remote landing strips in the wilderness to go camping and fishing with the family. Because Garry grew up knowing how to work hard, he gravitated to a career working in commercial construction.
He began by working in California and eventually worked for Bud Mahas Construction located in Salt Lake City Utah for over 25 years. Unfortunately construction required him to travel often, working out of town during the week and traveling home on the weekends. He married Louise Almond and had four boys, Kevin, Brad, Michael, and Eric.
They were later divorced. Garry loved cars and driving. He liked to drive fast, as many Highway Patrol can attest.
He drove commercial truck with his brother Rodney for a short time and drove through most of the United States. Garry later married Janice Leavitt in 1970. He adopted Janice’s daughter Michelle, and had a son Richard four years later while living in Pocatello, Idaho.
They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple December 6th, 1986. In January of 1971, Garry was injured in a work-related accident in which he lost his right leg below the knee. He went through very intensive rehab with many days spent in wheelchairs and crutches until he was able to get back on the job.
Garry and his family eventually set up roots in Nampa Idaho and built their dream home on the 8 acres they owned. After Michelle graduated from Nampa High School, the family moved to Farmington, Utah in 1985. They bought a home that had been condemned due to a fire and remodeled it, and later added onto the back for a new master bedroom and garage.
They later moved to Layton Utah in 2007. Garry was grandpa to 3 grandsons and 3 granddaughters, and had 2 great granddaughters. Garry liked to travel.
He went to the Philippines, New York, Panama, and Hawaii. He recently decided to go back to the temple when his grandson Ethan returned from his mission last summer, with the help of his faithful home teacher Brent Craven. The night before his passing he gathered with his family for his son Richard’s birthday dinner.
Little did his family know that would be their last memory of him. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Hyrum City Cemetery.
