Gary Louis Hoen, 81 of Newton died on Friday, March 8, 2019, at the Newton Health Care Center. A burial will be held at Chariton Cemetery at a later date. Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League, in honor of Gary and Shirley’s love for animals, may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Gary, the son of Russell and Bertha (Bell) Hoen, was born on June 5, 1937 in Newton. He grew up in Newton and attended Newton schools. On April 5, 1958, Gary was united in marriage with Shirley Morrison at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Gary then served his country in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1960-1962. After living in California, Gary and Shirley returned to Newton, where they built a home on the Hoen homestead and Gary worked at the Maytag Company until his retirement. After retiring, Gary and Shirley moved to Joplin, Missouri.

Following Shirley’s death in 2008, Gary returned to Iowa. Gary enjoyed antiques, restoring clocks, hunting, and fishing. More recently, he liked trips to Prairie Meadows.

Gary had a generous heart and will be greatly missed. Gary is survived by his sister, Marge (Hoen) Niewald of California; sister-in-law, Mary (Morrison) Stone of Virginia; and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; a brother, Bob Hoen; and a sister, Carol (Hoen) Hawkins.
