Gary Denton Whelchel, 76 of Idabel, passed away June 14, 2018 at Paris, Texas. He was born June 18, 1941 in Ada, Oklahoma the son of C.D. and Leona Cole Whelchel. Gary graduated high school at Horse Man in 1959.

He joined the United States Navy in 1960 where he spent 18 months on the USS Lexington and 18 months in Guam. On May 26, 1967, Gary married Mary Ann Carter. Gary received his Bachelor’s Degree at East Central University in Ada, OK.

He then attended Tulane University and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Social Work and served as county welfare director until retiring at age fifty. Gary enjoyed spending time at the lake on his houseboat. Gary is survived by his wife, Mary and his lake family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Denison Cemetery with Charles Nation officiating. Interment will follow.
