Gene F. Charles, 82, formerly of Sheboygan, WI currently of Chambersburg, PA passed away in Chambersburg on Saturday, June 2, 2018. He was born on July 9, 1935 in Plymouth, WI the son of the late Stanley and Martha (Brandenburg) Charles. After graduating from Plymouth High School, Gene served in the US Air Force from 1954-1958.

He attended Lakeland College and University of Wisconsin Stevens Point where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. He worked as a city planner for Becher-Hoppe Associates in Wausau during the 1970’s. He was a member of Unity Church of Sheboygan, a deacon and usher, a Senior Youth Church Fellowship Counselor, a favorite youth counselor at Camp Sturtevant and a Board Member for the Pathways of Light Retreat Center in Manitowoc Co. Gene belonged to the NRA, YMCA, Sheboygan Lions Club, Appleton Kiwanis Club and Accordion Club as well as President and Lt.

Governor of the Toastmasters Club in the 1970’s. He served as a Mentor and Re Specialist for Student Environmental Action Council for (SEAC) for Earth Days, taught environmental classes at Wisconsin School Forest (1970’s), served on Senator Feingold’s Health Task Force Committee and volunteered at numerous business and service clubs in Sheboygan/Wausau areas. In addition to woodworking, furniture restoration, volleyball, fishing and hunting, he enjoyed playing the stump fiddle with the Sheboygan Accordion Club, attending theater, musical events and volunteer work.

Gene is survived by his daughter Carrie (Terry) Clark of Chambersburg PA; son, Cory Charles of Sheboygan; 2 brothers in law; 3 sisters in law and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (Caljouw) Charles (2015) whom he married on June 4, 1960. Gene will be greatly missed and was much loved by all who knew him.

He was a kind and gentle man who always liked a good laugh, a good joke, enjoyed life to the fullest and wanted everyone he knew to do the same. The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Wittkopp Funeral and Cremation Services in Plymouth. The visitation at the funeral home, 123 South St. will be from 12- 2 pm prior to the service.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery with the Air Force Honor Guard providing Military Honors. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, act. alz.org.
