Obituary George Alberts Jansons, age 67, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019. Juris Alberts Jansons was born July 13, 1951 in Oldenburg, Germany to Kristaps and Marta (Salaks) Jansons. At five months of age, on Christmas Eve, the family was transferred from the displaced person camps in Germany to the United States, ultimately making Grand Rapids, Michigan home for the rest of his days.
He became a US Citizen on September 12, 1961 and received his new name of George. He attended Central High School, graduated in 1969, and worked for the family business of Vacuum Cleaner Supply. George’s passion was auto racing, starting with the Soap Box Derby to his career as a professional driver (and builder) of Midget Race Cars.
He married his beloved Marie Pierce on July 9, 1976. They were blessed with two daughters that he adored. On Labor Day of 1981, a racing accident ended his career.
For the past 16 years he resided at Spectrum Health – Fuller Campus. He called it home and loved the friends he made there. His favorite thing was laughing with them.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Pierce; his daughters, Jill Jansons, Tina (Derek) Gless; two grandsons, Dexter and Maxwell Gless; brother, Marty (Inese) Jansons; sister, Baiba (Robert) Lieckfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 25, 2019 at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, 49546) with Marite Strautins officiating. George’s family will greet friends and relatives during visitation at Zaagman Memorial Chapel on Sunday, March 24 from 2-5 pm.
