Obituary for George R. Stever Print George R. Stever, 90, passed away on January 30, 2019, after living a Christian life of grace, compassion, service, and humility. He was born in Mapleton Depot on April 8, 1928 and was a lifelong resident of Tyrone, PA, residing at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, PA, at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Simparosa Stever; three sons, David (Helene) of Columbia, MD; Mark (Audrey) of Canton, GA; and Matthew (Christine) of Altoona; 10 grandchildren: Brian (Jessie), Anthony (Ashley) Stever, Ashley (Ryan) Walk, Kevin, Kyle (Melissa), Sarah, Cassidy, Shane (Hicham), Barton (Alicia), and Trae Stever; two step-grandsons: Matthew and Mitchell Colombo; and 9 great-grandchildren: Lucy, Liam, Isaac, Sloane, and Kent Stever; Haiden, Riley, Harper, and Sawyer Walk, one step-great-grandson, Joseph Colombo, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer F. and Beulah Stever, his four brothers: Thomas, William, Richard, and James Stever, and his sister, Sara Markel. He graduated from Tyrone High School in 1947 and attended Juniata College. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany.

George retired in 1991 as Vice President of Keystone Financial Services (First Blair County National Bank) after 31 years of service. He was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking of Rutgers University, a member of the Blair County Bankers, Past-President of the Juniata Chapter of NABAC, the Blair County Chairman of PABAC, and he was a member of the Ambassadors Club. Prior to working at the bank he was employed by the Beneficial Finance Company.

George was very active and dedicated to the Tyrone community. He was a charter member and State Director of the Tyrone JayCees and was recipient of the “Boss of the Year Award”. He was a charter member and Director of Sinking Valley Country Club, and charter member and Secretary of the Monogram Club where he was elected to the Monogram Club Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was Treasurer of Tyrone Public Health; Past-President, Treasurer, and Director of the Tyrone Kiwanis Club. He was Past-President and Director of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce; served on the board of directors of the Blair County Respiratory Disease Society; and served on the Chem-First Advisory Council. He was a Past-Director and Chairman of the Trustees for the Tyrone YMCA, a member of the Tyrone Historical Society, Director of the Tyrone Improvement Corporation, served on the Tyrone Sewer Authority, and the Fund-Raising Committee for the Main Street Manager Program.

He was also a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Seabrook Blanching Corporation. George was an active member of The Wesley United Methodist Church where he served as a member and Past Chairman of the Administrative Board; Superintendent of the Sunday Schools; Treasurer of the Building Fund; Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Committee, Finance Committee, Trustee’s Committee; and served as a Lay Leader. In addition to being a four-year varsity letterman in wrestling for TAHS, he was a dedicated fan of Tyrone sports, never missing a home football game, basketball game, or wrestling match.

He was a member of the American Legion, Anderson-Denny VFW, Blazing Arrow and Hook & Ladder Company, and the Tyrone Elks, Lodge #212. Friends will be received on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 5 – 8 pm at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. as well as on Wednesday February 6, 2019 at the Church of The Good Shepard from 10 AM until the 11 AM service at the church with Pastor Tina Hawkins officiating. Interment with military honors to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
