George W. Fessenmeyer, 90, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. George was born January 20, 1928, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, to Elmer and Marguerite (Ohlinger) Fessenmeyer. He attended Kent State University before joining the United States Army in 1946.

He served in Korea in 1947, and was discharged in 1948. On January 27, 1951, he married Joanne Frances Pattie, who survives him. He was employed as a commercial art apprentice at his father’s art studio (Montgomery, Fessenmeyer, Ward), and five years later, was hired at Pitt Studios design department.

In 1959, he moved his family to Ashland, where he joined Gapstur Advertising as an art director. In 1969, George joined Topper Associates as part-owner and art director. After five years at Topper’s, he started his own art studio called Advertising Design.

His chief accounts included Hess & Clark, Rubbermaid, and Wooster Brush, along with various smaller accounts. He retired in 1993, from Advertising Design. George served the Ashland Noon Lions for nearly thirty years as their assistant pianist, and was a supporter of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.

Besides being a golf hacker, his favorite hobbies were video recording, classical music, baseball, American history, and playing the piano while accompanying his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren on their various instruments. He is survived by his wife; son James Fessenmeyer of Delaware; daughter Christine (Robert) Hill of South Euclid; daughter Debra Akers of Ashland; grandchildren Megan Edwards, Matthew (Erika) Akers, and Michael Hill; great- grandchildren Natalie, Emelia and Jocelyn Edwards; Violet Akers. Preceding George in death was his father and mother; sister Barbara Ann Tan; and son-in-law Eric J. Akers.

The family will receive visitors at 10 A.M. Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Heyl Funeral Home. A service will take place at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the funeral home with Pastor Kay Ashby officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard.
