Geraldine P. (Gerry) Byron, 93, died peacefully at home on December 28, 2018. Born on December 17th, 1925, she was the daughter of Forrest A. and Bertha B. Pfleghardt and was a life-long resident of Charleroi. Mrs. Byron was a life member of Christ Lutheran Church and served many terms as a member of the church council.

Over the years, she also served as church secretary, Sunday School teacher, usher, secretary of WELCA, ladies sewing group, and children’s reader for St. After School. After graduation from Charleroi High School in 1943, Gerry was employed at the Washington County Courthouse as legal secretary to the late Judge Roy I. Carson for nearly a decade. In 1973, Mrs. Byron was the first female ever elected to an official position in Charleroi.

She served as Charleroi Borough Tax Collector for the following 32 years, retiring in 2005 at the age of 80. Gerry was a current member of the Charleroi Historical Society, Athene Club, and site committee of Riverside Senior Center. She was also the Washington County Democratic Precinct chairwoman, a former member of Beta Y-Gradale, Recreation Board, Charleroi Garden Club, AARP, Woman’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Association, and was a past recipient of the American Legion Citizen of the Year.

Gerry was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and nightly viewer of Jeopardy. Survivors include daughters, Beth Blevins, Amy (David Allen) Heerschap, Meg (Michael) Malady; and sons James (Janet) Byron, John Byron, and Thomas (Maria) Byron. She was lovingly known as Nan to sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, especially her honeybee and ladybug granddaughters Brittany Mosco and Molly Ann Malady.

In addition to her to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William V. Byron Sr.; son, William V. Byron Jr.; brother, Forrest J. Pfleghardt Jr.; son-in-law, Robert D. Blevins; son-in-law, Alan S. Heerschap; and grandson, Mac McBurnie. Services will be announced at a later date.
