CHARLESTON, SC – In profound sorrow we announce the passing of Mr. Gilbert Gary Nelson, 72 of Charleston, SC. , and the widower of Mrs. Lucinda Romaine Nelson, who entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. He is the father Robert Lee Aiken, Ricky Nelson, Dannie Lee Nelson, Gary Nelson (Felisha), Crystal J. Nelson, Patrice A. Nelson and Terri S. Johnson.

Gilbert Gary Nelson affectionately known as “Gilly” was born on March 21, 1945 to the late Ruthie Esau Spann and Willie Nelson. Gilly was respectfully raised by his grandmother Wilhelmenia Vanderhorst and grandfather Timothy Esau in Summerville Community. He quietly entered eternal rest on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.

He received his education in the Dorchester County Public School System, where he graduated from Summerville High School. He then went into the military for a brief time before realizing his heart was elsewhere. He loved laying bricks with his uncle Esau and cousin Jimmy Whitney.

His passion was driving eighteen (18) wheeler trucks and motor truck with Saulsbury Motor Company. He was united in matrimony to Lucinda Romaine in September of 1967. He was the proud father of four boys and three girls.

He was a respectful member of Brownsville Community Church until his health began to fail. Lucinda Romain Nelson preceded him in death. Gilbert leaves to cherish his memory his sons; Robert Aiken of Ridgeville, SC, Ricky Nelson (Kawaii) of Summerville, SC Danny Nelson, Gary (Felicia) Nelson of Ridgeville, SC; his daughters, Crystal Nelson of Ridgeville, SC, Patrice Nelson of North Charleston, SC and Terri Johnson of Goose Creek, SC, his siblings; Ernest (Ruth) Spann, Donald Spann of New York, Samuel Oliver (Marlene) of Alabama, Leslie Spann, Summerville, SC, one sister, Rose Shereece Spann McGhee of Ohio, Thirteen grandchildren; Ravon Lavar Nelson, Charrisse Shiola Nelson, Camille Garrison, Christphor Karon Martino, Kiersten Juanyae Martino, Marques Cobbs, Rashawn Nelson, Anthony Jerome Nelson, Davon Vereen, Khalen Nelson, Jada Crockett, Aiianna McCants, Jeron McCants, Jr., a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Special friends Ramona Howell and Ravenia Glover.
