Jones-Small was born on June 19, 1957 in Manhattan, New York, at Metropolitan Hospital to the late Hillary Sr. and Mabel Jones. Gwen was the fourth child out of eight children. Gwen attended P.S. 213, Montauk Junior High School and Prospect Heights High School.

Gwen enjoyed her career in service to others as an unarmed guard and aide to the underserved communities of New York City. Gwen started a family, having three children, one son, Vincent Woods preceded her in death. Gwen battled addiction and regularly attended N.A. meetings to strengthen and fortify her resolve to stay clean.

She succeeded staying in recovery for over 25 years. Gwen also fortified herself by attending the Kingdom Hall for spiritual food. Gwen loved the outdoors and enjoyed her hobbies of music and dance, shooting pool, playing cards and handball.

Gwen was hands on, she loved life and loved spending quality time with family and friends. Gwen was a beautiful person and would give her all to help every and anyone. On April 15, 2019, after an extensive hospital stay, Gwen was called home.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her two children, Roxanne Kelly and Glen Woods; two granddaughters, Vanasia Woods and Laila Scott; her only grandson, Logan Scott; five siblings, Hillary Jr., Darlene, Eric, Sharon and Helen Jones; five nieces, Tanama, Sondra, Felicia, Tahara and Erica; three nephews, Steven Sr., Jeremiah and Seth; a host of great nieces, nephews, and cousins; and longtime companion, Aaron Small. Gwen will be missed tremendously and will forever be in our hearts.
