Harry D. Glacken Sr., 92, East Taylor, who was born June 6, 1926, in South Fork, PA, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at home. Harry is the son of the late Harry M. Glacken and Nettie (Hagerich) Glacken. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Leona (Werfel) Glacken, also commonly known as Kay.
He is also survived by his four sons: Harry D. Jr. and his wife Jean (Ingraham) of Smyrna DE, Carl W. SR. of Cresson PA, Mark A. of Newark DE and Dale B. and his fiancé, Janice James of Harrisburg PA. Survivors also include 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
He is preceded in death by Roscoe, Walter, Twila, Betty Botteicher and Elwood. He is survived by his brother, Gerald Allen. Harry was known to others as Harry, Sonny, Dad, Pap and Goosey.
Harry served honorably in the US Army Infantry during WWII and again during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he was employed by the Conemaugh and Black Lick Railroad, where he retired in 1986 as a Conductor with 36 years of service. His lifetime interest and fascination for railroading continued into his retirement.
With this inspiration, he built a very impressive model railroad that he named Goosey-Town. Harry always kept busy with such endeavors as designing and building his own home from the ground up. After that undertaking you could usually find him in his shop working on his many projects and general repairs.
He, along with his sons and brother, built their own camper and could be found camping as far away as Canada. Harry also enjoyed boating, hunting and filming his own home movies. He was particularly proud of being the Scout Master of Summit Chapel’s Troop 205.
Harry taught his sons self-confidence, problem solving, hands-on skills, and most importantly common sense. These teachings proved later to be very beneficial in their careers. Harry truly enjoyed life and talking to people.
He had a great sense of humor, lived life simply and had a kind spirit. Most importantly, Harry was a proud and active member of the Summit Chapel United Methodist Church, serving God the best he knew how. His family will receive family and friends from 3 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the Baker-Harris Funeral Chapel, 229-231 First Street, Conemaugh, PA 15909.
The church viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Summit Chapel United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Nov 21, 2018, with Funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Keith H. Lohr officiating. Harry is to be committed to the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in East Taylor Twp.
