YOUNGSTOWN – Harry McLaughlin Haddox passed away peacefully at Hospice House on January 25, 2019 in Poland at the age of 93. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Nancy (Raymond) Krygowski of Liberty; Colleen (Alan) Oleksa of Pittsburgh; and Holly (Tom) Airhart of Youngstown. Seven grandchildren; Brian (Gillian) Krygowski and Scott Krygowski of Cincinnati, and Amanda Krygowski of Youngstown; Alan J. Oleksa, Jr., Megan Oleksa and Lauren Oleksa of Pittsburgh and Tony (Melanie) Ambrose.
Mr. Haddox also had seven great grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews. Harry, known as Mickey to his family and friends, was born November 19, 1925 in Youngstown to Harry Max and Rose Marie McLaughlin Haddox. He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1944.
After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS L.S.T 867. He was especially proud of his service during World War II and loved visiting the World War II Museum in New Orleans. It meant so much to him when someone noticed his World War II hat and thanked him for his service.
A highlight of his life was being chosen for Cleveland’s Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He married the former Dorothy June Tomko on April 15, 1950. Harry was appointed to the Youngstown Fire Department in 1953 and was promoted to Captain in 1967 and retired in 1982.
During his time as a firefighter he proudly held many positions in the IAFF. Harry also worked as a stagehand at Powers Auditorium, Stambaugh Auditorium, Youngstown Symphony, and other venues in our area. Harry held many offices in the IATSE Local 101and worked until he was 90 and was the honored with a gold union card and a retirement party.
Harry also owned Haddox Repair Service in which he installed and repaired beauty shop equipment throughout the area. He was well known and will be sadly missed by people in the entertainment production industry. Harry loved traveling the world with his wife Dorothy.
He was an active and dedicated member of St. Christine Church and had been an usher for many years. He was a member of the Gaelic Society, Saxon Club, AFL CIO and many other organizations. Harry is preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy, his wife of 65 years, his parents, his brothers, Fred and Donald, his sister, Sally and his first great grandson, Burke Krygowski.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Harry’s life. A Funeral Mass is schedule for Saturday February 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christine Church. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the mass.
At a later date, Harry and his wife, Dorothy will be interred at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please call the World War II Museum, 505-528-1944, Rebecca at ext. 396.
