Helen D. “Sue” Vieau, age 75, of Cheboygan passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born April 9, 1943 in Flint, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Marie (Welling) Athey. As a young girl, Sue and her family moved to Wolverine where she was raised.

On November 11, 1961 in Indian River she married Melvin C. Vieau who preceded her in death in 2007. Sue had farmed with Mel and had also worked as a housekeeper. She enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping and attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include her four children, Melvin (Lydia) Vieau of Topinabee, Tina (Randy) Leavitt of Indian River, John (Cindy) Vieau of Cheboygan and Dawn (Robert) Lemon of Topinabee, two brothers, Gene Athey of Wolverine and Jim (Nelva) Athey of Cheboygan, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband Mel and her parents, Sue was preceded in death by two great granddaughters and her sister, Elsie Bur. A memorial service will take place at the Berean Bible Church in Topinabee and will be announced as information becomes available.

A luncheon at the Topinabee Fire Hall will immediately follow the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of the Straits or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
