Helen Lambert , August 28, 1919 — September 01, 2018

Helen Lambert (nee Bowen) died peacefully on September 1, 2018. She lived at the Vicar’s Landing community in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Her beloved husband, Robert, passed away in February 2011.

Helen was born on August 28, 1919 in Missouri, the oldest daughter in a family of eleven. She studied nursing at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, TN and graduated in 1940 as a Registered Nurse. She was a pioneer and after studying at the American Airlines Stewardess Corps, became a Stewardess at the time when a RN degree was required.

After the start of U.S. involvement in World War II, she enlisted as a Navy Nurse and attained the office of Ensign. Her work was principally in San Diego caring for soldiers from the South Pacific. She met her husband, Robert Lambert, in San Diego where he was stationed before leaving to command minesweepers in the South Pacific.

They married in 1943 and after Robert returned from the South Pacific, they moved to the Chicago area where she continued her nursing career at industrial companies. They moved to the suburbs of New York City in 1957 and raised their family there. In 1991, she and Robert retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, first at Sawgrass and then at Vicar’s Landing.

She enjoyed the study of nature, reading, and a diverse group of friends. She and Robert were active at their church, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Helen is survived by her daughter, Mary and her husband, Lance Knox, and their family, and numerous relatives and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, several brothers and sister, and her son, Michael. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 in the Chapel of Vicar’s Landing.

A private family interment will be held at a later date.
