Helen Winter, formerly of Elkhart Lake, passed away Monday morning, April 16, 2018 at Brewster Village in Appleton. She was 83 years old Helen was born September 13, 1934 in Sheboygan Falls, the daughter of Gerhard and Hilda (nee Schaar) Van der Veen. She graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1952.

On November 11, 1967, she was united in marriage with Robert “Bob” Winter in Sheboygan, WI. He preceded her in death in 1995. Helen was an entrepreneur her entire life.

From designing… Read More » and building homes, developing subdivisions and eventually along with Bob being the majority stockholder and board member of four local banks. Helen loved to travel especially her long drives with Bob to Florida where they would spend months at a time walking the beach, eating waffles with strawberries & whipped cream and still doing what they loved, looking at real estate. This was a time, as she would say, to “unplug”.

She was a very smart, witty, shrewd business woman with a heart of gold. Helen was a very generous person and was always there for anyone at anytime. Her favorite saying was, “God always sends me good people” and we have proof of that from the wonderful loving care she received at Brewster Village in Appleton.

Helen is survived by her children: Bradd (Shannon) Winter of Elkhart Lake, Roberta (Richard) Smith of St. Petersburg, FL and Helene (Clifford) Watson of Tarpon Springs, FL. She is further survived by her grandchildren: Rebecca Smith, Megan and Riley Winter and Cliff, Cooper, Carver and Caden Watson; sister Betty Shirpke of Marshfield, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Winter and her siblings: Marcella (Harold) Hopp, Delores Krueger, Marlene (Jim) Gross and Jim (Ruth) VanderVeen.

A funeral to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Zimmer Westview Funeral & Cremation Care Center, W2132 Garton Road in Sheboygan. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00-11:00AM. Helen will be laid to rest beside Bob at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler.
