Hershel’s Obituary Hershel (Wes) Cox 1922-2019 Hershel (Wes) Cox was born on December 24, 1922 to William (Andy) Cox and Lucy Smith Cox in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. He grew up on a farm with ten brothers and one sister. He joined the Military at the age of 17 and fought in WWII as well as the Korean War while serving in the Navy, Army and Air Force.

During his service, he met Laverne Fenslage and the two were married in 1953. They were blessed with two children, Kevin and Judy. Hershel earned numerous honors and awards throughout his career including the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal, and the Guided Missile Insignia.

Hershel retired as a Master Sergeant from the Air Force in March of 1964 from the 385th Strategic Missile Squadron at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, when he moved back to Oklahoma and began his next career with the Muskogee Police Department. During his years at MPD, Hershel was promoted to Lieutenant, served as a supervisor over the records division and was also one of the first men in Oklahoma to attend Polygraph Examiner School at Texas Tech University in 1968. Hershel continued to be a polygraph operator for many years, even after retiring from MPD in 1985.

Hershel was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Frank (Poncho), Eual (Smokey), Carroll (Nip), Carl, William (Red), August (Doc), Loren (Golly) and Larry (Shorty) Cox as well as his loving wife of 62 years, Laverne Cox. Hershel is survived by his wife, Anne, of the home; son, Kevin Cox; daughter Judy Elliott and husband Chris; sister Jewel (Shirley) Hall; brothers Francis (Ceasar) and Lew Wentz (Scotty) Cox; sister-in-law, Florence Chambliss; grandchildren Greg Jennings and wife Jamie, Steven Cox and wife Shelby; Jason Cox and fiancé Lesley; Grant Mitchell, Erica Buck and husband Chris, Pat Elliott and wife Whitney; Ben Elliott and wife Amanda; Jake Elliott and wife Becca. Great-Grandchildren include Tate, Whitney, Ethan and Emma Jennings; Natalie, Emmitt, and Rush Cox; Jentry and Beckham Cox; Cooper and Carter Buck, Makaylin and Charlotte Elliott, Aiden and Alexis Gamble.

A celebration of life for Hershel Cox will be held on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 1:30 pm at Southeast Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Park with Greg Jennings, Steven Cox, Jason Cox, Grant Mitchell, Ben Elliott, Pat Elliott, Jacob Elliott and Tate Jennings serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons.
