Idalyn Baldwin Spooner, 89, widow of George Hansford Spooner, died Wednesday, July 18th, 2018, in Franklin, NC. A native of Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late Duncan McTyeire Baldwin and Nora Elizabeth Keller McKellar. A graduate of Erskine College in Due West, SC, she held positions as: a chemist at Selenese in Rock Hill, SC; a research assistant at UNC Medical School in Chapel Hill, NC, for more than 15 years; and was supervisor of the cardio-pulmonary laboratory at UNC Medical School.

She was gifted with a green thumb. In 1960, her husband agreed that she needed a greenhouse because he and the children were being crowded out by the tropical paradise, so they bought a prefab greenhouse, and put it up themselves. Shortly after that, her husband gave her a white cattleya for their anniversary.

From then on, she said she had “orchid fever”. She even has orchids that carry her name in the crosses, as well as having propagated and named her own orchids. She was a devoted wife to George Hansford Spooner III for almost 51 years, until his death in 2004.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Kalen Spooner Inabinett and her husband Raun (Ruffin,SC), son David Allan Spooner and his wife Kim (Kailua-Kona, HI), and Thomas Bryan Spooner (Franklin, NC). Grandchildren include: James Monroe Inabinett and his wife, Samantha (St. Johns, FL), Kathryn Inabinett Berry and her husband, Joshua (Ruffin, SC), Lauren Spooner Westervelt and her husband, Travis (Hollywood, SC), and David Allan Spooner, Jr. and his wife, Samantha (Goose Creek, SC). Great Grandchildren include: Hugo Marshall Ackerman, Ross Monroe Inabinett, Natalie Marie Spooner, Nora Lynn Inabinett, Hudson McTyeire Berry, and James Fuller Ackerman.

A memorial service will be held at Harley Funeral Home in Greenwood, SC on Saturday, July 21st, at 1:00 pm. A private burial will be held at Old Greenwood Cemetery on East Cambridge after the memorial. Flowers are always appreciated, but for those who prefer an alternative, please donate to any charity of your choice.
