Irene’s Obituary On Saturday, February 9 at 5 p.m. God called Irene Lavone (Gilbertson) Wald to his side. Irene was born in La Crosse, Wis. to James and Ida (Kunze) Gilbertson.

They moved to Valley City, N.D. where Irene grew up with her sisters, Mertice and Lucille. She attended St. Catherine’s grade and high school. She graduated from Mercy Nursing School in Valley City.

Part of her training was in Minneapolis, Minn. ; Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Devils Lake, N.D. She met and married Harvey P. Wald, her partner for 65 years, on August 5, 1953.

Harvey was called to serve in Korea for little over one and a half years. While he was overseas she worked at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. When he returned they moved to Bismarck, N.D.

She worked at St. Alexis Hospital while they lived there. Harvey’s work as a bricklayer moved them to Rapid City, S.D. where she worked at St. John’s Hospital. Shortly after, they moved to Pierre, S.D. where she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital from 1964 through 1996.

She would have served longer, but Harvey forced her to retire. No more wonderful person ever existed. She never had a bad thought or word of any person she ever met.

Her husband was appraised by many that worked with her of how good she was as a nurse and person. When she found time she was an avid antique collector. She had many skills that she enjoyed in life.

She was good at working with her hands and mind. She had a great joy and love for her children, Debbie K. Thomas, James M. (Sherri Sundem) Wald, Andy J. (Kathy Hlebanja) Wald, Harvey D. (Renee Hartman) Wald all of Pierre; Kevin R. (Colleen Daly) Wald of Montevideo, Minn. ; Jonathan G. (Julie Coutant) of Highland Ranch, Colo.

; her grandchildren Heather, Kayla, Tallen, Riley, Sigrid, Aubrey, Tanner, Emily, Anika, Collin; and her great grandchildren Natalia, Elle, Haakon, Silas and Harrison. She looked forward to family get-togethers and was really highly elated to see them. They were her greatest joy.

She will always be in all of our hearts so therefore she will never die. She will be with God and her parents and sister. Memorial Mass is at 10:30am, Friday, February 15 at Ss.
