Burlington – Iris Dean Matkins Pennington, 86, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 21, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. A native of Alamance County, she was born February 23, 1932 to the late David Silas and Annie Gerringer Matkins and was the wife of 63 years to Howard Franklin Pennington of the home. Iris was a longtime member of Glen Hope Baptist Church where she played the organ, worked with the children’s department and taught Sunday school for many years.

… Read More » She retired from Burlington Orthopedic and was a graduate of Altamahaw Ossippee High School and also Elon College as Magna Cum Laude. Iris was a loving wife and mother, however, she found true joy in devoting herself to her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Gary N. Pennington (Libby) and Darryl D. Pennington (Leigh Ann); grandchildren, Max Pennington, Elizabeth Pennington, Rachel Pennington, Ryan Pennington and a brother, Eldridge Matkins (Vicki).

She was preceded in death by her parents. A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00pm on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Lewis Baber with the burial to follow at Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215. You may sign the online register book at www. lowefuneralhome.com.
