Obituary for Jack Donald Cook Jack Donald Cook, 89, of Kerrville, TX, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 7th, 2018 at the Alpine Terrace care center. He was born October 9, 1928 to Benjamin and Appie Cook in Pharr, Texas. He graduated from Edinburg High School, attended Pan American University and was a lifelong employee of South Western Bell Telephone Company.
He married Doris Evi Templin (formerly of Germany) in August of 1956 in Edinburg, Texas. He is survived by his sister Rosalee Frost and her husband Charles Frost of Alpine, Arizona. He is also survived by his wife Doris Cook of 62 years, his son Bryan Cook of McAllen, his son Nelson Cook of Kerrville and daughter Sharon Smith of Kerrville.
Continuing to honor and cherish his memory are his 3 granddaughters- Emmie and Adrie McGowan of Kerrville and Isabella Cook of Austin. He also has many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews of Boerne, San Antonio, Houston, Tyler, the Rio Grande Valley and North Carolina. All of whom he cherished.
Jack was a kind, generous and loving man who enjoyed gardening, and planting trees with his granddaughters, deep sea fishing in Mazatlan Mexico, and Dove and Whitewing hunting with friends and family. He enjoyed the annual event and hosted guests from Houston, San Antonio and elsewhere with a large backyard BBQ and bird cook out, lasting well into the night. He would talk about the event with great appreciation for those who made the annual trip to the RGV and how everyone had a great time.
He enjoyed watching classic movies, mostly Westerns with John Wayne, Lee Marvin and Jimmy Stewart being some of his favorite actors. He also enjoyed raising registered Quarter Horses and was an original member of the Rio Grande Valley chapter of the Red Brangus Cattle Association. Jack served God and his country proudly.
He was in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. of the 40th Infantry Division when he served in the Korean War from 1950-1954. In 1952, he became one of the “Frozen Chosen” being stationed where the temperatures outside were 35 degrees below zero, and to survive he came up with the idea to hand-sew a wool blanket to the inside of his military jacket to keep warm.
Jack had many fascinating stories he spoke of when he was deployed to Korea and Japan. He was endlessly witty, always smiling and trying to extend his joy to others, even joking to strangers he would meet. Whether it was eating out at a restaurant, gathering together for the holidays, or firing up the BBQ pit, he was a devoted family man, as family was his greatest joy.
We will miss him greatly and the joy and laughs he gave us, we thank him for all that he has done for us. A special thank you to Lulis Cook, Shiela Davis, Lucian Smith and Charlotte Flint In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Calvary Temple Church Kerrville for Vacation Bible School, Grace Academy of Kerrville or The Boanerges’ Pentecostal Apostolic Assembly of Kerrville.
