She was the only child of Arthur and Dorothy Ingwersen.
At the age of 3, her family moved to Turlock, California, where her father was employed as a Project Engineer for the highway and freeway construction extending from Sacramento, California to Reno, Nevada. Her early education was in Turlock, and she graduated from Turlock High School in 1954. During these years, Jackie was active in sports, and became a member of the Masonic sponsored organization, Job’s Daughter’s.
Jackie went on to attend the University of California Berkeley, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 1958. She was affiliated with the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, becoming president of her pledge class. During her college years, she spent her summers in Alaska, working as a staff member for the Morrison Knudsen Engineering Company, engaged primarily highway construction engineering.
Subsequent to her graduation from Berkeley, she furthered her education at San Francisco State University, where she received a degree in Education and her teaching credential. She later taught math in the San Juan School District in Marin County. During the summers when she wasn’t teaching, Jackie worked for Bishop National Bank in Honolulu, Hawaii, and later as a Flight Attendant for Trans Ocean Airlines and World Airways, both based in Oakland, California.
She traveled extensively to the Pacific Islands, Japan, China, and other parts of the Orient. During the historic event when Guam entered the “Jet Era”, Jackie was proud to witness the first landing and takeoff of Pan Am’s Boeing 707 in 1960. Following her Flight Attendant career, she accepted a position as Personnel Manager for the Loyalty Group Insurance Services Company in San Francisco.
Jackie enjoyed numerous outdoor activities, including sailing, and skiing. It was on a ski trip to Squaw Valley, California in 1961, shortly after the Winter Olympics, where she met her future husband, Edgar “Ed” Anderson. During their engagement period, in addition to ski trips together, Jackie loved the times spent sailing with Ed in the San Francisco Bay.
Jackie and Ed were married in Sausalito in 1966 and established their residence in Arcata, California, where Ed’s lumber business was located. They were married for 52 years, during which time they raised a family of four daughters and one son, which Ed had from a previous marriage, and their own son who was born in 1970. In addition to raising her family, Jackie volunteered her time and energy to serving her community.
She was very active in the Episcopal Church, serving as president of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California’s youth summer camp, “Camp Noel Porter”, located at Lake Tahoe, California. Jackie was also a long-standing member of Humboldt Sponsors, a non-profit women’s organization dedicated to fundraising initially for the Florence Crittenton Home of San Francisco, a home for unwed mothers, and later devoting its energies locally to charitable causes in Humboldt County. She also helped in the founding of the Jacoby Creek Children’s Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhance and maintain a high level of education for the students of the Jacoby Creek School District.
Jackie looked forward to the summer months spent in the Anderson family house at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she hosted many gatherings of family and friends. Sailing and water sports were central activities. She loved her time at the “Lake”, with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, sharing with them her passion for hunting arrowheads on the shores of her beloved lake.
When she wasn’t combing the beaches, she could be found curled up in a quiet place with a book. A voracious reader, Jackie’s interest in literature included anything from “War and Peace” to the “National Enquirer”! She loved history, had a great appreciation of the Arts in its many forms, and relished any opportunity to go antiquing.
Jackie cared deeply for animals, especially of the feline and canine species. She rescued many strays, finding homes for them, starting with her own. She was well loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband Edgar, daughters Lois Elizabeth (Andy) of Tonasket, WA, Martha Victoria of Fairhaven, CA, Marilyn Frances of San Diego, CA, Christina Louise (Alex) of Austin, Texas, and son’s George Edgar of Newnan, GA, and James Arthur (Rene) of Colorado Springs, CO.
