James’ Obituary James Joseph ‘Jim’ Rickman, age 90, Joplin, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Spring River Christian Village. Jim was born April 9, 1928 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to the late Joseph Edward Rickman and Maud Lee Mowery Rickman and had lived in Joplin since 2015. He graduated from Poplar Bluff High School, attended Missouri Valley College and graduated from Washington University.

Jim worked in the Fox C-6 School District in Arnold, Missouri for over twenty years, retiring as superintendent. Following retirement, he served as an ombudsman in nursing facilities, on the Poplar Bluff City Library board; along with other community volunteer leadership positions. Jim was a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association; the National Education Association; several veterans’ organizations; the Missouri Association of School Administrators; National Association of School Administrators; AARP; Masonic Lodge and the Rotary Club of Arnold, where he served as past president.

Jim was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during World War II. Following his discharge, he re-enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, attaining the rank of 1st Lt. In his free time, Jim enjoyed playing cards, volunteering wherever he could, the stock market and spending time with his family.

He will be missed by all who knew him. He married Verna Alberta Burris on February 17, 1950 in Poplar Bluff. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Marilyn J. Guerich, Delray Beach, Florida; Jane A. Honeywell and husband, Bob, Joplin; grandchildren, Becky Barrera, Deborah Guerich, Martha Parker, Ruth Tsakh, Lois Sanchez, Joe Guerich, Lisa Lesley, Sarah Gaither, Katherine Lynch, Mike Honeywell; and great grandchildren, Nora Barrera, Evie Tsakh, Logan Lesley, Tristan Lesley, Brooklyn Lesley, Kaison Lesley, Leland Gaither, Annie Gaither, Clementine Gaither, Braden Honeywell and James Lynch. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Susan; two brothers, Charles Rickman and Wayne Rickman; and two sisters, Beulah Bocek and Ellen Bocek. Services are planned for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Park Chapel.

Rev. Dr. John Swadley will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.

Visitation is planned at Fitch Hillis Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, followed by graveside services at 2:00 p.m. with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
