James L. Jernigan, 85, of Ft. Mitchell, AL passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm EDT Friday, July 27, 2018 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, AL with Rev.

Junior White officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Jernigan was born January 7, 1933 in Russel County, AL son of the late Shellie Tom Jernigan and Annie Bell Whitaker Jernigan. He worked as a Superintendent for Welch Construction for many years and then later operated his own construction company Jernigan Builders, Inc Mr. Jernigan proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of Silver Run Baptist Church and the American Legion. Mr. Jernigan’s passions were gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with friends and family. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James Rodney Jernigan; one sister, Frances Smith and one brother, Edward Tom Jernigan.

Mr. Jernigan is survived by his loving wife 65 years, Mary Alice Maloy Jernigan; one daughter, Kathy Hodge and husband Jimmy of Ft. Mitchell, AL; one son, Tony DeWayne Jernigan and wife Grace Elaine of Phenix City, AL; one sister, Edna Bryan of Phenix City, AL; grandchildren, Amanda Yancey (Rodney), Chad Jernigan, Summer Jarosz (Julius), Jacie Branch (Kevon); great-grandchildren, Colton Yancey and Bethany Yancey; many extended family and friends. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Woodland Baptist Church Missions Fund, 114 Bayview Dr. Phenix City, AL 36869.
