Obituary for James Martin “Marty” Mullaney James Martin (Marty) Mullaney passed away on September 11th at the age of 66. Marty was born in Louisville, KY on November 8, 1951 to James Martin and Lois Catherine Mullaney. He is survived by Gloria Perri, his loving wife of 32 years, along with daughter, Brenda Taylor, grandsons Robert Shaughnessy, Dane Bowling, and Garrett Schulz, and his mother-in-law, Paula Perri.

Marty is also survived by his siblings Connie Pearl (Jim), Kevin Mullaney, Mary Lea Quick (Kerry), Steve Mullaney (Laura), and Sally Sanders (Mark), along with many nieces and nephews. Marty was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Mullaney. After graduating from Western High School, Marty served in the Air National Guard.

In his early 20’s, he was one of the first drivers hired by Fed Ex in the Louisville market, where he eventually met his wife, Gloria. During his time at Fed Ex, he also owned Marty’s Tavern in south Louisville with his brother, John. Marty spent more than 30 years managing and building businesses in the commercial modular industry, which included assignments throughout the continental US and Europe.

During his early career days at GE Capital, he rose up the ranks quickly, while scurrying to obtain his college degree at nights and weekends, which the lack thereof may or may not have been clearly stated on his resume when initially hired. Not one to be deterred, without the knowledge of his colleagues, he ultimately obtained a degree at DePaul University, finishing in record time at the young age of 39. Marty’s international business experience and leadership skills eventually led him to Satellite Shelters, an industry leading provider of commercial modular space.

He spent 15 years as the company’s Chief Executive Officer / President, retiring in 2017. Marty served as a long-time member, on the Board of Directors and ultimately President of the Modular Building Institute (industry trade association). Marty was known for his abundance of luck (and some skill) in many endeavors, including shooting pool, playing cards, rolling dice, betting the horses, and the occasional side bet on the golf course.

After retiring, Marty found more time for his favorite pastime on the golf course with many of his lifelong friends at Wildwood Country Club. His love of golf and travel took him to courses all over the world including a recent trip to Scotland with a group of friends and his brother, Steve. One of Marty’s most satisfying endeavors was his involvement in the launch of Orchid House, a local therapeutic and medical daycare program, which is scheduled to open doors in a few weeks.

As a founding board member and generous donor, Marty is credited with developing a solid financial plan and a sustainable business model that will ensure the success of the organization for years to come. In his loving memory, the organization is being renamed Marty’s Orchid House. From Marty’s Tavern to Marty’s Orchid House, quite a journey.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville.
