James S. Hopson, Sr. of Carrollton, Texas February 2, 1928 – April 19, 2019 James Stuart Hopson was born February 2, 1928 in Sinton, Texas to William David and Pearl Hopson. He was the middle child of five children. His mother was a school teacher and his father was in the grocery store business.
His father passed away when he was 14 and Jim began finding jobs near home to add to their family income. He was gifted in carpentry and developed his building and renovating skills. In his twenties, he met Jean Tittle.
They dated for 6 months and got married. They were married for over 65 years until she passed away last year. In 1958, Jim and Jean moved to Irving where they raised their children Jim Hopson, Jr. and Debbie Johnston.
He began a successful career with Sherrill Draperies in the commercial upholstery and drapery industry. His company provided textiles, draperies, blinds and wall coverings for numerous office buildings and hotels such as the Anatole and the Adolphus. Throughout his life, Jim was a hardworking man with a sweet spirit for the welfare of others and a desire to serve the Lord.
As a visionary servant leader, he served in the church in a variety of capacities. At South MacArthur Church of Christ, he was a Deacon for 3 years and an Elder for 27 years. During that time, he led renovations, building projects and many important leadership roles.
Following that period, Jim and Jean were founding members of Christ Church Irving. Jim and Jean were surrounded by friendships built by the bond of Christ. He loved and mentored the young leaders in the church.
His friendships were important to him and he treasured each one. Every day he had conversations with his children, their spouses and at least one of his grandchildren. He loved them and prayed daily for each of them by name.
He marveled at the blessing of each great grandchildren. His wife, Jean was the love of his life. He was so proud of his son, Jim Jr. and daughter, Debbie, their spouses, Diane Hopson and Doug Johnston, his five grandchildren, their spouses and five great grandchildren.
Jim was loved and admired by his children, his grandchildren and all who knew him. He made each of us better individuals. His wit, sweet spirit, loving and generous heart will remain with us forever.
Preceded in death by his wife Jean Hopson March 8, 2018, he is survived by a son James (Jim) Hopson, Jr. and wife Diane of Plano; and daughter Deborah Johnston and husband Douglas of Carrollton; five grandchildren: Brian and Emily Johnston, Brent & Christy Johnston, Jordan Johnston, Kaylan Hopson, Kelli and Jeff Marchetti; and five great-grandchildren: Evan and Caleb Johnston, and Henry, Lilli and James Johnston; sister Lillian Hopson of Houston and Buddy Hopson of Sugarland; and brother-in-law Buddy Wood in Irving.
