Obituary for Janet Herring Allison Powell Janet Herring Allison Powell June 27, 1941 – May 9, 2018 The daughter of the Rev. Wade H. Allison and Lucile Herring Allison, Janet Allison grew up in Rose Hill, NC, where her father was the Presbyterian minister and her mother taught in the elementary school. Her youth in Rose Hill provided many happy memories and close friends with whom she kept in touch throughout her life.
She graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School and Queens College in Charlotte, NC, where she majored in English. She lived for 53 years in Johnson City, TN. She shared her life happily and completely with her husband, Harry Douglas Powell, whom she married in 1963.
Their children are Wade Hampton Powell and his wife Patty Burns of Mount Vernon, OH; Douglas Reichert Powell and his wife Pegeen Reichert Powell of Oak Park, IL; and Allison Powell Sharpe and her husband John William Sharpe of Asheville, NC. Grand children are Andrew Burns Powell and Sarah Louise Powell of Mount Vernon, OH and Charlie Reichert Powell and Elizabeth Reichert Powell of Oak Park, IL. Janet adored her family and was proud of every one of them.
She taught sixth grade in the Johnson City Public Schools for twenty years: First at Henry Johnson Elementary, later at Liberty Bell Middle School, and finally at Indian Trail Middle School. She loved her students and was devoted to the teaching of science and language arts. Covenant Presbyterian Church was the center of her very active life.
She loved the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was involved in every phase of church life. She was a member of the church choir since her teen years, and she was an ordained Elder. In 2006, she was awarded Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women in recognition of her devotion to the work of the church.
Janet was also a member of Shady Oaks Garden Club, AQ Chapter of PEO, and the Book Bags Book Club. She grew roses and enjoyed her yard, and she loved to read and discuss books. She was a gracious hostess who loved to entertain and cook for the many guests who visited her home.
She was an avid traveler and with Harry explored much of the United States and many foreign countries. Perhaps her favorite destination was the beach, especially North Carolina’s Topsail Beach, where she never tired of collecting shells. Janet and Harry moved to Johnson City in 1965, when Harry began his career as a physics professor at East Tennessee State University.
They adopted East Tennessee as their home and fully enjoyed all the pleasures of this beautiful mountain region. They especially loved attending and volunteering for the Jonesborough Storytelling Festival. Janet treasured her friendships with her neighbors, her school colleagues, her fellow church members, her college friends, her hometown friends, and especially “The Beach Girls”.
She felt richly blessed by the many wonderful people in her life. A Celebration of Janet Powell’s life will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018, at 6:00 pm, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 603 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN, with the Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating.
