Graveside services will be held at Garden of Memories in Sweetwater, TX, at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 there will be a reception/visitation following the graveside at the First United Methodist Church Parlor. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Jean was born on March 27, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the oldest of two children born to Merle and Opal Hartwig. The family moved to Fort Worth, TX, in 1943.

She married James C Bates on December 31, 1946, in Fort Worth. They had one son, James L Bates. They were married for 54 years and lived primarily in Texas.

She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper until she retired in 1994 from Jim’s Truck & Alignment Service in Sweetwater, TX. After retirement, she and James enjoyed living in their motor home until his death in January 22, 2001. They particularly enjoyed their travels to Colorado.

Jean was an avid sports fan who rarely missed an opportunity to watch the Texas Rangers or the Dallas Cowboys, as well as several college teams. She loved spending time with her family and supporting their activities and accomplishments. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a nephew, Ricky Hartwig.

She is survived by her son James (Jim) and wife Sue of Granbury, TX; granddaughters Jenny Miller and husband, Roscoe, of Weatherford, TX, and Jill Sczech and husband, Joey of Carrollton, TX; four great-grandchildren (Ryland Miller, Brody Miller, Ella Sczech and AJ Sczech; her brother Richard (Dick) Hartwig and wife, Dorothy, of Abilene, TX; nephew Robert (Bob) and wife Anne of Tacoma, WA; niece Cynthia (Cindy) Grant and husband, Russell, of Rowlett, TX; and grand-nephew Cameron Hartwig of West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Hood County, PO Box 1866, Granbury, TX, 76048.
